Students learn about business and money from pros

Twenty-two representatives of Litchfield Bancorp spent the morning Tuesday at Litchfield Intermediate School presenting Junior Achievement curriculum to 300 students in grades 4-6.
Bank employees, executives, directors and associates volunteered their time to teach financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship as a way to help prepare students for life in a global economy.

“By sharing their financial commitment, time and knowledge, Litchfield Bancorp is helping to prepare these students to be contributing individuals in their own community,” said Peter Blum, district manager for Junior Achievement of Southwestern New England.

Among the volunteers in the classrooms were Litchfield Bancorp's new president and chief executive officer Thomas Villanova, recently retired president and CEO Mark Macomber, and board of directors President Donald Mayland.

All of the volunteers participated in a Junior Achievement training session that prepared them to deliver age-appropriate lessons about personal finance and the business world.

It was the first time that Litchfield Bancorp has participated in “JA in a Day” program at a school, although many bank associates have volunteered on an individual basis at schools in the area.

"I think it was a great learning experience for the students and for the volunteers," said Alan Landau, a Litchfield businessman. "The kids were terrific and were willing to listen and learn about the importance of financial literacy. It was a valuable program and one I hope we can do again."
Junior Achievement is the world's largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make intelligent academic and economic choices.

JA programs are delivered by corporate and community volunteers and provide relevant, hands-on experiences that give students from kindergarten through high school knowledge and skills in financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. JA reaches four million students per year in 124 markets across the U.S., with an additional 5.8 million students served by operations in 119 other countries worldwide.

to 33 non-profit organizations across western Connecticut
The Union Savings Bank Foundation has once again demonstrated their support for local organizations that provide healthcare, promote educational achievement and address human needs by awarding $214,300 to 33 non-profit organizations across western Connecticut. This year’s grant recipients were recognized during a breakfast ceremony at the Bank’s North Street, Danbury office on November 9.
Representatives of the 33 non-profit organizations receiving a total of $214,300 grants from the Union Savings Bank donation gather at the bank's North Street, Danbury branch.

The foundation’s 2011-2012 grants represent a 6.9 percent increase in dollars allocated compared with $200,380 allocated in 2010. Since the USB Foundation was founded in 1999, it has distributed 241 grants totaling $1,550,210 to more than 100 non-profit organizations.

The 2011-2012 grants will help support local services and programs that encourage healthy lifestyles; literacy and academic advancement; economic and personal stability; career awareness and skill development for children and youth, housing and meals to the elderly, less fortunate and homeless; and support to individuals and families with disabilities and critical health needs. continued

Marilyn Mitchell Retires from Litchfield Bancorp
After 30 years with Litchfield Bancorp, assistant to the CEO and corporate secretary Marilyn Mitchell will be retiring at the end of December.

Mitchell, a Harwinton resident, has held a number of positions at the bank over the course of three decades, including most recently as assistant to outgoing president Mark Macomber. The two began working together when Macomber was appointed president and chief executive officer in 1994 and Mitchell was named his assistant.

"It's been such a pleasure and a learning experience working for Mark," according to Mitchell. "particularly because of all that he is involved in. I feel fortunate for the opportunity." Macomber, likewise, holds Mitchell in high regard. "Marilyn has been my right hand for 18 years and has made me a more effective president and the bank a better bank," Macomber said. "She is professional, highly responsive and dedicated to our institution."

Mitchell holds the distinction of being the only Litchfield Bancorp employee to have worked under three presidents. She was originally hired in 1968 by then president H. Curtis Ferris. In the late 70's and early 80's Mitchell staffed the bank's satellite office at the Crutch and MacDonald Drug Store, which was located at the time on the corner of Routes 202 and 63. She left the bank at one point to work as a secretary in the medical field, and in 1988, the bank's CEO at the time, Howard Kerpelman, asked her to return as a commercial loan clerk and to train to become the corporate secretary, a position she assumed in 1991. www.litchfieldbancorp.com

VNA NORTHWEST RECEIVES GRANT FROM UNION SAVINGS BANK
VNA Northwest has received $6,000 from Union Savings Bank Foundation, Inc. for advanced training for two staff nurses. The grant will pay tuition costs for the nurses to attend an upcoming wound care training and certification session.
Since staff education is a high priority for VNA Northwest, Executive Director Nancy Deming said she is most grateful to receive this funding. Currently, five VNA Northwest staff nurses have completed advanced wound care training and received certification credentials from the National Alliance of Wound Care (NAWC®).

Although all clinical staff members are trained in wound care, VNA Northwest encourages as many as possible to attend the advanced training and become certified in this discipline. Many home care patients are at high risk for developing pressure ulcers or skin tears, and these can cause infection and/or hospitalization.

"Wounds have a major impact on the patient's quality of life and they also place an economic strain on the healthcare system. VNA Northwest is taking a proactive approach in this area, so that we can meet the needs of each patient in our service area," said Ms. Deming.

Union Savings Bank's Foundation Grants Committee awarded grants totaling $214,300 to 33 organizations at its Foundation Awards Breakfast in November.

The agency serves patients in the following communities: Bantam, Bethlehem, Cornwall, Falls Village, Goshen, Harwinton, Kent, Lakeville, Litchfield, Morris, New Hartford, New Milford, Norfolk, Northfield, North Canaan, Plymouth, Salisbury, Sharon, Thomaston, Torrington, Warren, Washington, Winsted and Woodbury. Rick Judd, senior vice president (left) and Sue Voghel, VP, market manager (right) at Union Savings Bank present a $10,000 check to Berta Mette, Litchfield Community Center executive director. The donation will be used towards construction of a new community room at the center.

A community hub for programs such as "Stitch and Chat," "Tai Chi", "Zumba Fitness," "Bridge for All," performances, family events, a teen program, movie showings, health screenings and more, the Litchfield Community Center will soon expand its footprint.

Union Savings Bank recently donated $10,000 towards construction of a new multi-purpose community room at the center that will allow more of the region's groups and organizations to hold meetings and conduct programs.

Designed by Architect Paul Hinkel, the 27' x 32' addition will compliment the existing structure and include a meeting and activity room, family friendly restrooms and large equipment storage. Groundbreaking by the project contractor, Burlington Construction Company, will take place this month. Interior Designer Alexandra Champalimaud will create the new community room's space.

Merle Haggard
Jan 21 | 8pm
Onsale to General Public: Dec 2.
Country music’s outlaw "Honky Tonk" legend Merle Haggard announces a tour stop in Torrington, CT at the Warner Theatre performing selections from his new album "Working in Tennessee" and hit songs from his more than fifty year career as a performer.

There is no one in contemporary country music who has created a more impressive legacy, or one that opens a wider variety of styles...taken as a whole, the body of work that he has created is absolutely staggering.

Few country devotees, be they old-timers or neophytes, are unfamiliar with the craggy Haggard mask of a thousand photographs - that countenance that’s been etched by time and experience like the granite face of your favorite cliff. And even fewer are those who are unfamiliar with the evocative Haggard delivery that has spawned an entire school of country vocal stylists.

In the ever-expanding array of country music stars, hit makers and idols, Haggard walks in no man’s shadow. Instead, he casts a far-reaching shadow of his own. Rare is the country balladeer that has mastered the idiom at so many different levels as has he.

Fab Faux

Become a Warner Member for as little as $50
Formed in 1998, The Fab Faux treat the seminal music of the Beatles with unwavering respect through painstaking recreations of the songs (with emphasis on the later works never performed live by the Beatles). Far beyond a cover band, they play the music of The Beatles so impeccably that one must experience it to believe it. Calling them, “the greatest Beatles cover band – without the wigs,” Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke wrote, “the Faux invigorate the artistry of even the Beatles’ most intricate studio masterpieces with top chops and Beatlemaniac glee.” Approaching the songs with the intent of playing them live as accurately in musical reading and in spirit as possible, The Faux’s breathtaking performances tend to dispel all concertgoers’ previous notions of a Beatles tribute act.

THE WARNER THEATRE
Built by Warner Brothers Studios and opened in 1931 as a movie palace (1,772 seats), the Warner Theatre was described then as "Connecticut's Most Beautiful Theatre." Damaged extensively in a flood, the Warner was slated for demolition in the early 1980s until the non-profit Northwest Connecticut Association for the Arts (NCAA) was founded and purchased the theatre. The Warner reopened as a performing arts center in 1983, and restoration of the main lobbies and auditorium was completed in November 2002. In 2008, the new 50,000 square foot Carole and Ray Neag Performing Arts Center, which houses a 300 seat studio theatre, 200 seat restaurant and expansive school for the arts, was completed. Today, the Warner is in operation year-round with more than 160 performances and 100,000 patrons passing through its doors each season. Over 10,000 students, pre K-adult, participate in arts education programs and classes. Together, with the support of the community, the Warner has raised close to $17 million to revitalize its facilities. NCAA's mission is to preserve the Warner Theatre as an historic landmark, enhance its reputation as a center of artistic excellence and a focal point of community involvement, and satisfy the diverse cultural needs of the region.
